This year, we are celebrating a true champion of the community, Senator Victor Torres! 🌟 It's been an incredible journey working alongside Senator Torres to uplift Central Florida. From his days in the United States Marine Corps to the New York City Transit Police Department, and finally, to his impactful tenure in the Florida Legislature, Senator Torres has been a beacon of hope and progress. His dedication to serving the people of Senate District 25, encompassing Orange and Osceola counties, has been unwavering. Whether it's advocating for vulnerable populations, championing legislative reforms, or fighting for the rights of the voiceless, Senator Torres has left an indelible mark on our community. We're immensely grateful for his partnership with Heart of Florida United Way, where together, we've worked to address issues of food insecurity, homelessness, access to healthcare, and so much more. Did you know we weren’t always called United Way? This week we’re throwing it back to the inception of our organization all the way to our strong community presence in the 1970s. How many of these facts did you know? 💙 Before his influential term as Orlando Mayor, Bob Carr formed the groundwork for what would eventually become Heart of Florida United Way, then termed a Community Chest, in 1939. 🎲 Does the term “Community Chest” sound familiar? That’s because the organization inspired the Monopoly game space of the same name! 🤝 By the 1970s, we were named United Way of America, and our campaign in 1979 raised over $3 million for Orange, Osceola, and Seminole counties. We had developed strong partners in the community – like Walt Disney World!
