I love making jello shots for parties. You can make them ahead of time and there are recipes to match any colors you want (like these blue jello shots and these white ones) so they always go with the decor.

Purple Hooter Layered Jello Shots Recipe (1)

I first made these purple and green layered jello shots for a Maleficent themed Halloween party I threw a couple of years ago.

The flavors are based off of the Purple Hooter drink, so they taste great and the colors are perfect for Halloween!

Since I had so much success with the Pina Colada layered jello shots at my Alice in Wonderland party, I decided to try the layers again with different flavors.

I have to say they turned out pretty well.

Another big party hit!

These jello shots use 2 small (3-ounce) boxes of lime jello and 1 small (3-ounce) box of grape jello as the jello flavors.

Vodka and Chambord (or another raspberry liqueur) are the alcohol flavors that are added to the mix.

If you want more purple, you could reverse the layers and do 2 packages of grape jello and 1 of lime. But I find the purple a little too sweet which is why I went with 2 green layers.

What Size Of Jello Shot Cups Are The Best?

Purple Hooter Layered Jello Shots Recipe (2)

I find it’s easier to do the layers if you use taller jello shot cups like these ones*.

With the shorter jello shot cups, you have to be really careful that you don’t make the first layer too thick (and end up with really skinny top layers). When I made these ones originally, I made them in the shorter cups because that’s what I had in the cupboard, so I’m saying this from first hand experience 🙂

In either case, you will definitely need 2-oz jello cups. The 1-oz ones are just too small to make layers in.

How To Make Purple Hooter Layered Jello Shots

The First Green Layer

Purple Hooter Layered Jello Shots Recipe (4)

Mix 1 cup of boiling water with the Lime jello mix.

Then add ¼ cup lime juice, ¼ cup cold water and ½ cup vodka.

You can adjust the amount of vodka depending on how strong you like your jello shots to be. Just make sure that the total amount of cold liquids (lime juice + water + vodka) comes out to no more than 1 cup.

Fill the jello shot cups about 1/3 full.

Putting the jello shot cups on a cookie sheet makes them easy to take in and out of the fridge. You’ll have to do that a couple of times to make the layers.

Put the lids on the jello shot cups and chill in the refrigerator until they are set, usually between 2 and 4 hours.

The Middle Purple Layer

Purple Hooter Layered Jello Shots Recipe (5)

Once the first layer is chilled and set, you’re ready to make the purple layer.

Mix 1 cup boiling water with the Grape Jello.

Add in 1/2 cup Chambord, 1/4 cup lime juice and 1/4 cup cold water.

Let the jello mixture stand until it has cooled to room temperature. This is very important or it will melt the green jello and you will end up with brown jello shots instead of layers.

When it is cool, pour it on top of the green layer in the jello shot cups.

You may end up with a few green ones that don’t have a purple layer. They still taste great, so I just eat them 🙂

Chill in the refrigerator until the second layer is set, another 2 to 4 hours.

The Top Green Layer

Purple Hooter Layered Jello Shots Recipe (6)

Finally, mix up the 2nd green layer using the same ingredients as the first one.

Let it stand until it has cooled.

Then pour it on top of the grape layer.

Let it chill for another 2 to 4 hours and your layered jello shots are ready to serve!

I usually serve my jello shots with mini tasting spoons*. A lot of my friends prefer eating them with spoons rather than downing the shots straight from the shot cup (although the guys usually opt for that approach). These spoons are the perfect size.

Ingredients

Purple Layer

  • 1 3-oz (small) package purple jello
  • 1 cup hot water
  • ½ cup raspberry liqueur
  • ¼ cup water
  • ¼ cup lime juice

Green Layers

  • 2 3-oz (small) packages lime jello or 1 6-oz box split in half
  • 2 cups hot water divided
  • 1 cup vodka divided
  • ½ cup lime juice divided
  • ½ cup cold water divided

Equipment

  • 1 cookie sheet (optional)

  • 48 Jello shot cups

  • 1 pot or kettle

  • 1 mixing bowl

  • 1 measuring cup

Instructions

First Green Layer

  • Get your jello shot cups ready to fill by laying them out on the cookie sheet

  • Pour 1 package of the Lime Jello into the mixing bowl.

  • Bring the water to a boil.

  • Add 1 cup of boiling water to the lime jello and mix until the crystals are dissolved.

  • Add ½ cup of the vodka, ¼ cup of the lime juice and ¼ cup of the cold water to the jello.

  • Pour the jello into the bottom 1/3 of the jello shot cups. Be careful not to overfill or your other layers will look really thin.

  • Put the lids on the shot cups and let them cool in the refrigerator until they have set, 2 to 4 hours.

Purple Layer

  • Pour the package of grape jello into the mixing bowl.

  • Bring the water to a boil.

  • Add 1 cup of boiling water to the grape jello and mix until the crystals are dissolved.

  • Add 1/2 cup raspberry liqueur, 1/4 cup water and 1/4 cup lime juice to the jello.

  • Let the mixture cool to room temperature, about 20 minutes. Do not rush this step. Pouring warm jello over the previous layer will cause it to liquify and you’ll end up with a murky mixture.

  • Pour the purple jello over the top of the green jello, filling the jello shot cup to about 2/3 full.

  • Put the lids on the shot cups and let them cool in the refrigerator until they have set, 2 to 4 hours

Second Green Layer

  • Pour the second package of lime jello into the mixing bowl.

  • Bring the water in the kettle to a boil.

  • Add 1 cup of boiling water to the lime jello and mix until the crystals are dissolved.

  • Add ½ cup of the vodka, ¼ cup lime juice and ¼ cup cold water to the jello.

  • Let the jello mix cool completely, about 20 minutes. As with the previous layer, do not rush this step. Pouring even slightly warm jello over the previous layer of jello will cause it to liquify.

  • Pour the jello over the top of the purple layer, filling the rest of the jello shot cup.

  • Put the lids on the shot cups and refrigerate for another 2 to 4 hours until they have set.

Notes

  • Depending on how much alcohol you want in your jello shot, you can change the amounts of vodka, lime juice and water. Just make sure that when you add them together, the total amount of liquid comes out to no more than 1 cup. Otherwise, the Jello may not set.
  • Putting the jello shot cups on a cookie sheet makes transporting them back and forth to the refrigerator much easier!
  • If you want to prevent water condensation from building up on the inside of the jello shot cup lids, wait until the jello has cooled before putting the lids on.
  • If you prefer more grape and less lime, you can reverse the layers and do 2 purple ones with a green layer in the middle.

What is the best alcohol to use for jello shots? ›

Spiked with alcohol, these boozy jigglers are easy to make and come in every color and flavor imaginable. While vodka is a popular option because of its neutral flavor, you'll find jelly shot recipes that use rum, tequila, whiskey, liqueurs, wine, and even a dark beer. Some are layered, and others are nice and simple.

What is the ratio of alcohol to water in jello shots? ›

Danger suggests using a ratio of 1 part liquor, 1 part instant gelatin, 2 parts boiling water, and 1 part cold water. "Keeping this ratio will help ensure that the taste is fairly balanced and the drink can set easily in a solid form," says Danger.

Do Jello shots get stronger the longer they sit? ›

Jello Shots, like life, are all about balance. That said, if you want a strong one, it is possible if you leave it in the fridge long enough. In a Supercall experiment, we found that the strongest Jello Shot that will set is three-to-one ratio of 80-proof alcohol to water, and it took a full day to become mostly solid.

How do you make jello stronger? ›

The gelatin made with salt was stronger than the powdered milk but not as sturdy as the sugar. The average weight sugar was able to hold was 40.95 grams. Overall, sugar was the additive that created the sturdiest gelatin.

How much alcohol is too much for Jello shots? ›

Technically, you should put 1/2 cup of liquor into your Jello Shots. However, you can use as much as 2/3 cup without changing the texture of the Jello Shots. If you add too much alcohol, it will cause the Jello Shots to not set properly.

Is rum or vodka better for jello shots? ›

If you're making them for potency and less for taste, this probably is the best option. Try using flavored vodka to make it more palatable. Rum – This is my favorite alcohol to use, it tastes great with pretty much every jello flavor, it's smooth, and flavored rums can really add a lot to a shot!

Do you spray cups for jello shots? ›

Place shot glasses on a baking tray for easy transport. Pour gelatin mixture into paper or plastic shot cups* and chill in refrigerator until set, 1 hour or more. *Reviewers suggest coating the shot cups lightly with cooking spray so the shots slide right out.

Can you substitute juice for water in jello shots? ›

Fruit juice: Give the shots a boost by using fruit juice instead of water (this works best when using flavorless gelatin powder). Most fruit juices will work, but avoid pineapple, mango, kiwi and papaya because they don't set well. Other alcohols: Vodka isn't the only alcohol that works well in jello shots.

Can I use juice instead of water in jello? ›

I use water because it's easy to boil in a tea kettle. Alternatively, you can boil an extra 1/2 cup of fruit juice in a small saucepan, for a more concentrated and slightly sweeter flavor. In this case, you'd use 4 cups of fruit juice in total. Whisk well until the mixture is liquid, with no visible chunks.

Should you turn jello shots upside down? ›

That's where a new trick comes into play that promises to make downing those Jell-O shots at the party so much easier to consume: turn the shot upside down to prevent the Jell-O from sticking to the cup.

How do you get jello shots to slide out? ›

Place shot glasses on a baking tray for easy transport. Pour gelatin mixture into paper or plastic shot cups* and chill in refrigerator until set, 1 hour or more. *Reviewers suggest coating the shot cups lightly with cooking spray so the shots slide right out.

Why do you flip jello shots upside down? ›

To do it, simply pour your liquid Jell-O shot into the cups, add the lid, and then flip each one before refrigerating. The result is a shot that sticks to the lid rather than the edges of the cup, allowing you easy access to that Jell-O goodness and making it so much easier to slurp down.
