It has been well documented that the MWC has been a mediocre conference in 2024. For The Air Force Academy to win the baseball championship speaks volumes. Almost every team has an overall losing record with few exceptions.I still believe that Sjs has the best chance of winning the Tournament. Fresno folded unbelievably the last month of the season…. One of the great meltdowns in their program’s history. I believe they lost 17 of the last 21 games played. New Mexico has little pitching to survive and Air Force has two reliable arms. Sjs has 6-7 quality arms…. If managed properly. Flip is poor at managing a bullpen. They have the best lineup/ offense not only in the MWC…. But on the West Coast. They also are a veteran, old, experienced group. To go 22-31 overall is huge disappointment considering they were picked to repeat. They have underachieved in many people’s eyes. They are fortunate to get the tie breaker over Nevada. Nevada beat them two out of three.

Why do we get the tie-breaker over Nevada when they beat us 2 out of 3???

Or maybe in tiebreaker rules, the teams that played two series against one another had priority over a single series. Both SJS and Fresno each played Nevada once this year.

We should have swept New Mexico and won the series against Air Force. That would have made the difference and put us as the 1 seed again.

SJSU started 4-8 in conference but finished 12-6. There were some missed opportunities earlier in the season too.

The full tiebreaker rules are here. Tiebreakers are based on head-to-head win percentage.

That said, in the alternate scenario where SJSU beat UNM (with all other games having the same results on Saturday), Air Force (18-12) gets the 1 seed and SJSU (17-13) the 2 seed.

But the 3 and 4 seeds would be a bit more complicated due to Fresno, Nevada, and UNM all T-3rd at 16-14. Fresno State went 3-0 against Nevada and 2-1 against New Mexico. But Nevada and New Mexico went 3-3 against each other. So Fresno State would get the 3 seed, but who would get the 4 seed? From my interpretation of the tiebreaker rules, the two teams' records would be compared against the top three teams. Against Air Force, Nevada went 4-2, New Mexico 1-2, so Nevada would get the 4 seed in this situation while UNM would be DQ'd.

So UNM was playing as if their season was on the line.

Regarding Flipy managing the pitchers - Why did he leave the pitcher in on the 8th inning against New Mexico for so long. I would have pulled the pitcher after the other team had runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs. He didn't pull the pitcher unti bases loaded with 2 scored runs. Unacceptable

Ron…. He is hesitant in those situations…. he is reluctant to roll with the guy in the pen. The problem is that the guy in the pen throws too much…. And when he enters, he has already used up his best stuff.

Sam seemed to have a much quicker hook with his pitchers than Flip. Flip needs to get a deeper pitching staff for '25 and he needs to learn to pull these guys the second they get into trouble. We lose too many games because the pitcher is left in too long and then it's blast away time by the other teams offense.

Micky Thompson is the MW Pitcher of the Week.

The all-conference awards should be out by Wednesday. My early pick for Coach of the Year is Tod Brown at UNM because he delivered much more than expected. UNM was picked fifth but has the 2 seed in the MW tournament. And in the all-conference team, I speculate Dorraugh, Ross, and Thompson will be there.
