Theory, Philosophy, and Shakespeare Studies - Graduate Seminar
Alexa Alice Joubin
For many reasons, Shakespearean texts have been used as test cases in continuing philosophical debates over the nature of the humanistic enterprise. This graduate seminar examines the dynamics of early modern criticism, concentrating on particular Shakespeare plays in relation to important theoretical developments, including the bourgeoning field of critical race studies propelled by a renewed awareness of the importance of religion in the period and in our post-9/11 world. A second focus of the course is major philosophers' engagement with Shakespeare, including Hegel, Karl Marx, Freud, Lacan, and Derrida. In addition to theoretical texts, we will work with a group of core play texts. There will be ample opportunity to relate the course to any of your prior or developing interests or to work in original languages if you like. While an emphasis is placed on theoretical implications of various modes of confrontation with "Shakespeare," seminar members are encouraged to contribute to the reading list.

An Examination of Shakespeare and Adaptations of his Works Throughout Time
Patrick O'Neal
There can be little point in denying that William Shakespeare is among the most influential authors in literary history. For centuries, his works have been a staple of any literary education, and have spawned countless adaptations and imitations from his craft, both popular and otherwise. The popularity of The Bard's works has also created an enormous amount of scholarly discussion that ranges in subjects from the overarching themes within the plays to the significance of lines spoken by the characters, and these discussions have overflowed into the realm of Shakespeare adaptations. Through careful and thorough research, I have compiled criticism of what I believe to be the most influential and important adaptations of Shakespeare's plays throughout history based on the scholarly discussion surrounding them. From original productions of Shakespeare to film and graphic novel adaptations, this collection will attempt to discover the inner complexities of adapting Shakespeare, as well as what merits they might hold through an examination of the scholarly discussion surrounding these pieces.

Playing Shakespeare. By John Barton. London: Methuen Drama, 2009. Pp. ix + 210.
Michael Boecherer
John Barton's Playing Shakespeare is a transcription of nine BBC television programs, which originally aired in the UK in 1984. For those who did not catch the original airing of these programs, the series beautifully engaged the audience on a variety of Shakespearean topics. One could easily classify John Barton's Playing Shakespeare as a master class in acting, as Barton spends the entirety of the series directing and conversing with some of the most important Shakespearean actors of the 20th century: Sir Ian McKellan, Dame Judi Dench, Sir Ben Kingsley, and Sir Patrick Stewart to name but a few. While it might be easy to characterize this text as one best suited for drama students, John Barton's Playing Shakespeare will appeal to instructors and students alike. The book provides great insight into unlocking Shakespearean text, and encourages the reader to envision Shakespeare's drama using a variety of techniques.

Roma nel Rinascimento 2017 Edited by SHAKESPEAREAN INTERDISCIPLINARY VARIATIONS II
Roma nel Rinascimento: Shakespearean Interdisciplinary Variations, 2017
Hilary Gatti
ABSTRACT: Calling on the abundant recent bibliography of writings on both the philosophical themes running through Shakespeare’s dramas, and on the theme of friendship in early modern Europe, the essay enquires into the relationship between Hamlet and Horatio. It emphasizes traditionally recognized sources, such as Cicero’s essay De amicitia, but above all refers to a little recognized source in the works of the ancient Roman poet Horace (Quintus Horatius Flaccus), whose very name recalls that of Horatio. The final part of the essay concentrates on the theme of princely power and courtly servitude, pointing to a source for Shakespeare’s treatment of this theme in Machiavelli’s The Prince.
