SUNDAY, JANUARY 14, 2007 LOCAL NEWS THE ENQUIRER LIVES REMEMBERED Edward Lachman was phlebotomist with Hoxworth A man of many talents, including humor By Rebecca Goodman CLIFTON Edward Martin Ramnarayan Lachman made people laugh while they were bleeding. A phlebotomist one who draws blood at the Hoxworth Blood Center at University Hospital for 43 years, he has been described as a stand comedian, entertainer and preacher. Blood donors were so taken with him that some stayed around to get their fill of his jokes and advice. "My dad loved to make people laugh," said Eleanor Lachman, of East Walnut Hills. "He had a very hearty laugh himself, and when he was at the blood bank the donors enjoyed him because he would tell them stories that would encourage them to laugh even though they were donating blood at the time." It probably enhanced his popularity that he could draw blood quickly.

"I used to draw at least five donors per hour and more than 40 donors in eight hours," he wrote in a manifesto posted on his Web site. "The most I did was 55 in nine hours with the help of a hospital candy striper." Dr. Tibor Greenwalt, former director of Hoxworth, presented Mr. Lachman with an award for screening and drawing the most donors single-handedly. Mr.

Lachman, 80, died Dec. 30 at University Hospital of brain damage caused by smoke inhalation he suffered in a fire at his home in Clifton on Dec. 24. "To say the least, (he) carved his world and lived in it joyfully," said the Rev. F.X.

Muttoo, of Ontario, Canada, a friend of Mr. Lachman for 61 years. "He was full of mirth and laughter." Born i in 1 British Guyana to a Roman Catholic father, Mr. Lachman was baptized in the church. He was of Indian descent; he attended Mass on Sunday, but his grandparents taught him to practice Hinduism the rest of the week.

He also helped out at a Lutheran Sunday school and became a Lutheran catechist. This Hindu was open to exploring diverse belief systems. He practiced speaking in tongues, transcendental meditation, and apitherapy (therapeutic use of bee products including stings). In 1999, he was ordained a priest in the Old Catholic Church, which is not affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church. Mr.

Lachman came to Cincinnati in 1957 to become a mortician. While studying at the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science, he alMr. Lachman so served as a fill.in chaplain at General Hospital Lachman (now University Hospital), Longview State Hospital (now Summit Behavioral Healthcare) and Drake Hospital. He became a phlebotomist for Hoxworth the following year. Although he became a licensed embalmer in 1960, he opted to make a career of drawing blood.

He was also a life-long student. Mr. Lachman received a B.S. degree in microbiology from the University of Cincinnati in 1967, but he continued to take classes ultimately more than 200 for the rest of his life. He studied such diverse subjects as psychopharmacology, journalism, art history, acupuncture, and piano.

In addition to UC, he studied at the Athenaeum of Ohio, the U.S. CollegeConservatory of Music and the Cincinnati Bible Seminary. He was a stickler for good grammar. "He always wanted us to speak grammatically correct," said his daughter. "My sister and myself would write to my dad and he would correct our letters and send them back." Mark Folino, a manager of donor services at Hoxworth, said Mr.

Lachman was a true and valued friend. "He touched many people's lives. He was a man of integrity, honor and compassion. We will never, ever, see a man like (him) again." In addition to his daughter, Eleanor, survivors include: two other daughters, Shirley Clott, of Richmond, and Juliet Poe, of Alexandria; two sons, Max and Hans Lachman, both of Clifton; a brother, Stephen Lachman, of Walnut Hills; four sisters, Hermeina Naraine, and Gwendolyn Ramgobin, both of Cincinnati, Regina Lachman, of New York, and Thelma Baron, of Toronto; six grandchildren; and three great great-grandchildren. A memorial service is 1 p.m.

Jan. 27 at Norman Chapel at Spring Grove Cemetery, 4521 Spring Grove Ave. Mr. Lachman's body has been donated to the UC College of Medicine for medical research. Burial will eventually be at Spring Grove Cemetery.

with interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Johnson was shaken up but did not need hospital care. Johnson's daughter, Maria Papakirk, 34, said it makes her angry to think her father's attackers would hit a defenseless old man who still works 12-hour days slinging spaghetti and chili. "It happened so fast he didn't have time to do anything," Papakirk said. "It sounds like they waited for him and jumped him." After the robbery, more than 20 wellwishers called the restaurant to inquire about Johnson's safety, Papakirk said.

"Everybody says my dad is the nicest guy, and that is the best adjective to describe him," Papakirk said. "We are very grateful for all the people that have called."
